Half term’s a great opportunity to expand their minds and help them nurture new skills outside of the classroom – all while enjoying fun, quality time with the family!

We share our top cultural and adventurous lesson plans from the ‘school of life’ to keep your kids (and you) entertained and engaged during the break from school.

Let history come to life

Wow the kids with a trip to a real-life castle and let them play out their dream roles as a fiery princess or a charming prince for the day.

Alnwick Castle, Northumberland

Kids will instantly recognise Alnwick Castle as the filming location for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts! But the castle does have a very real history of its own which you can discover on a fascinating guided tour. Kids can also try a spot of archery - or even broomstick training, learn about medieval crafts from costumed artisans and brave the Dragon’s Quest immersive experience.

Archery

Check in to our Best Western New Kent Hotel and you can combine a break to Alnwick Castle and the stunning nearby Northumberland Coast AONB with all the delights of a city break in Newcastle.

Inspire your future astronauts

What do your kids want to be when they grow up? The UK is filled with fun, interactive museums to encourage your kids to learn more about the world they live in and awaken their passions.

The National Space Centre, Leicester

Inspire your children to reach for the stars, with a trip to the National Space Centre in Leicester. The whole family will love exploring the universe and learning about our adventures in space, through engaging, interactive exhibits and award-winning shows at the Planetarium.

Future-Astronauts

Why not end the fun-filled day with a stay at the family-friendly Best Western Plus Ullesthorpe Court Hotel & Golf Club.

Fire up their creativity

Half-term is a great time to get creative kids involved in learning a new craft. There are lots of workshops out there to help them get started, from sewing and felting, storytelling and acting, to painting and pottery.

Moon Studios Ceramics, Dorset

This pottery studio, set in a converted barn in Dorset, offers family workshops for some hands-on bonding. Once the professionals have shown you how it’s done, you’ll have a go on the potter’s wheel and get a chance to make and decorate your own vase, pot or tile. Your creations will then be fired for you to keep forever!

Pottery

Discover the art of pottery and a whole heap of family-friendly fun in The New Forest with a stay at the Best Western Royal Chase Hotel in Shaftesbury.

Get stuck in down on the farm

Days out at the farmyard are a fun family staple. It’s a win-win: kids get to learn about and feed the adorable farm animals, and run about in the fresh air so they’re tired and ready for bed by the end of the day (result!).

Cotswold Farm Park, Cheltenham

Get your wellies on and discover all the favourite farmyard animals and some rarer breeds at Cotswold Farm Park near Cheltenham, run by TV presenter Adam Henson, perhaps Britain’s most famous farmer. The farm also features wildlife trails to discover the local plants and animals and fun playground facilities that encourage kids to get muddy.

Explore the Cotswolds this half-term with a stay at the cosy yet contemporary Gloucester Robinswood Hotel, BW Signature Collection.

Ignite their inner adventurer

Are your kids happiest when out on a daring adventure? Do they want to be the next Bear Grylls? Make sure they’re safe out there with an outdoor skills course.

West Lakes Adventure, Lake District

West Lakes Adventure, based in Eskdale, offers a host of adventurous activities like ghyll scrambling, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, rock climbing, archery, and mountain biking to keep the kids well and truly engaged during the school holidays. They also offer guided walks where families can learn outdoor skills like navigation, backcountry first-aid and mountain safety.

Paddleboarding

Treat them to a show-stopper

Do you remember your first trip to the theatre? There’s something very magical about the first time you see the curtains open on a live performance.

Musicals and plays in London’s West End

For the best in glittering and family-friendly musical theatre, you can’t beat a trip to the bright lights of London. There are tonnes of family favourites on at the West End, including The Lion King, Wicked, Matilda, and the fabulous Harry Potter and The Cursed Child.
