Brexit is Brits’ saddest moment of 2016

As Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year, approaches, many Brits will be hoping the rest of 2017 proves more positive than 2016. When asked by Best Western Great Britain about their saddest moment in 2016, Brexit topped the charts (27%), closely followed by Trump’s victory in the US election (20%).

The loss of national treasures was also prominent on the list, with 1 in 10 respondents saying Terry Wogan’s death was the lowest point of their year, 8% picking David Bowie’s passing and 5% claiming George Michael’s death was their most depressing moment.

The break-up of Great British Bake Off and death of Harambe the Gorilla also made it onto the list and for one person, the Queen having a heavy cold at Christmas proved to be their saddest moment in 2016.

Whilst 60% of adults felt that 2016 was sadder than 2015, more than half are optimistic that 2017 will be a great year.

To help Brits kick-start their year on a positive note, Best Western is extending its winter sale and is offering 30-50% all its hotels until March with prices starting from £58 for stays across the UK*. Throughout Blue Monday, Best Western’s Call Centre will distribute treats such as free stays and upgrades at random to bookers.

*The rate will appear as ‘Winter Sale Rate’ on the Best Western website. Example deals include:

  • Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall Hotel – Saturday 28th Jan – from £58 BB for two people on the Winter Sale Rate
  • Best Western Glendower Hotel – Sat 28th Jan – from £64.40 BB for two people on the Winter Sale Rate
