• Southport Bijou Cinema

• The Atkinson

Describing itself as a “cultural pick ‘n’ mix for the family”, this 19^th century arts venue is home to music, comedy, theatre and exhibitions. Whether you’re in the mood for a pantomime, musical or historical talk – or all three – this creative and inspiring space won’t disappoint.

• British Lawnmower Museum

A quirkier option, but if vintage lawnmowers are your thing, this internationally famous museum dedicated to them won’t disappoint! Top up your knowledge on how they were invented, delve deeper into the world of antique garden machinery, or simply amuse yourself with sights of some of the rich and famous’ lawnmowers (including Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s).

• Lord Street

This Victorian canopied boulevard, with its own picture-perfect leafy gardens, has been a go-to shopping destination for more than a century. As well as great architecture, you’ll find charming speciality shops, designer boutiques and quirky gift shops. After your shopping needs have been satisfied, enjoy a refreshment at one of its many artisan coffee shops – grab a seat outdoors if you can, then watch the world go by.

• Arcades 

While on Lord Street, be sure to pop into Wayfarers Shopping Arcade, first opened in 1898. Flit between more than 30 exclusive stores, as you enjoy the Grade-II listed building’s glass-domed roof, period décor and vibrant atmosphere. Then, have a mooch in The Royal Arcade at the end of the street to discover antiques, collectables and bargains.

• Wesley Street

Think pastel colours, floral displays and community spirit. This little street known as “a village in the town”, boasts many shops guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Pop into its traditional sweet shop, celebration cake makers, family photographers, wool shop, butchers, antique jewellers, cafes and more for the most wholesome of strolls.

Round it all off with a craft beer, premium gin or single malt on the upstairs patio at the Masons Arms, Southport’s “best kept secret”.

• Ra bar

Found on the sophisticated Lord Street, this classy and elegant bar & restaurant offers a warm and relaxed atmosphere with an irresistible drinks selection and large menu. It servs breakfast, lunch and mezzah daily, which you can enjoy while watching the world go bar in its rustic outdoor seating area. 

• Nata Factory

If you find yourself faced with queues outside Nata Factory on Eastbank Street, get in line, because they’re worth the wait. This family-run café offers Portuguese delicacies in the form of sweet treats – namely their signature custard tarts – as well as homemade soups and sandwiches. Wash it all down with the great coffee on offer.

• Beach day

If you just need to get away from it all, head to sunny Southport Beach. Enjoy coastline views, a long sandy shoreline, and devour your favourite book. You’ll also find Marshside RSPB nearby, a supreme spot for bird watching. What could be better than exploring a 22-mile coast? Don’t forget your bucket and spade!

• Southport Pier

A beach day isn’t complete without a walk to the pier – in this case both the oldest and second largest in the country. Ice cream in hand, enjoy views of the North West on a crisp and clear day, or daydream about all the famous entertainers it’s hosted in the past, including none other than Mr Charlie Chaplin.

• Tee off on the fairways

Explore the UK’s ‘golf coast’ with an adventure around Southport’s golf courses, host to many championships. The prestigious Royal Birkdale is key to the town’s golfing heritage and regarded as one of the best English courses – practice your putter or simply nosy around.
