Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum is a brilliant new interpretation of the classic museum model. While it has its origins in the mid-18th Century, the current site opened in 2001. Thinktank is spread out over four floors with countless exhibits to explore, each linked to either the past, present or the future. By the time you’re finished exploring, you’ll know more than you ever thought possible, including how the steam engine was invented, how taste buds work and what’s in store for robots.

You’ll also have the chance to enter Birmingham’s first planetarium with a projection dome 33ft in diameter, while your young ones will delight in exploring Kids’ City, which teaches them how science and technology influences the world around them. Reach for the stars at the with its pin sharp 4K system. The surround sound really adds to the experience as well and it’s a great way to introduce the kids to the mysteries of the universe.

If you fancy something a bit more laid back, take a family stroll around the science garden, home to over 30 exhibits.

One of the latest attractions is an interactive gallery called MiniBrum. This is aimed at the under 8s and features a mini city where children are in charge. It includes several different play zones such as a transport area, shops, park and construction site with a slide. There are also specifically designed sensory areas for babies.

If you’d rather head for the seas then explore the Marine Worlds Gallery with creatures from the past and present including the notorious Ichthyosaur, a giant sea monster from the prehistoric age. You’ll also meet cute penguins and grumpy walruses during your time in the gallery.

Based in the heart of the city, Thinktank is simple to find and can easily keep you – and the kids – entertained from morning till night. Educational, fun and stimulating to people of all ages, this is a must-visit for anyone planning a 2-night family break in Birmingham.
