The UK is full of diverse and fascinating landscapes. From the sandy beaches to beautiful mountains, there’s plenty for you to check out while you’re on holiday.
Here’s some of our favourite spots that really showcase the variety of landscapes beautiful Britain has to offer.
The Devil’s Punch Bowl
The Devil’s Punch Bowl – named for its almost perfectly circular shape – empties and fills with water seemingly irrespective of rainfall, which historically led to people assuming it was the work of the Devil himself. According to legend, the Devil would jump from hill to hill making an almighty noise, which angered the god Thor, who tried to strike him with lightening. The Devil retaliated by scooping up some earth to throw at him, leaving a dip which formed the Punch Bowl. Now a site of Special Scientific Interest, it’s well worth a trip to marvel at this anomaly in the landscape.
There are plenty of walking routes which take in the Punch Bowl, as well as other areas of interest. The Hidden Hindhead trail is perhaps the most popular and passes by Gibbet Hill and the Temple of the Four Winds. Keep your eyes peeled for super-cute Exmoor ponies as you stroll.
Book a room with us at the Best Western Priory Hotel if you decide to getaway to nearby Norwich. It’s the perfect spot to rest up after a day’s hiking.
St Nectan’s Glen
Everyone knows how beautiful Cornwall’s beaches are but there’s a lot more to the landscape than just sand and sea.
Why not discover the forested areas of Cornwall? St Nectan’s Glen is a stunning place to explore. The waterfalls and groves give the area an almost otherworldly feel – and the local legends of faerie sightings only add to the mystique.
At the heart of the site is an impressive 60ft waterfall created by the River Trevillet carving its way through the surrounding slate. Perfect for paddling or snapping stunning pics. To reach the waterfall you’ll need to stroll along the riverbanks which are home to some truly special flora and fauna.
Porth Veor Manor Sure Hotel Collection by Best Western has plenty of rooms available if you fancy seeing another side to Cornwall.
The Lake District
The Lake District is one of the most picturesque landscapes in the UK and a must-visit for walkers, cyclists and nature-lovers.
England’s largest lake, Windermere, is surrounded by gorgeous mountains and several smaller lakes. It’s perfect for a quick getaway.
It’s even said there’s a creature living in Lake Windermere, akin to the Loch Ness Monster, perhaps you’ll get a glimpse?
For a slightly different view of the famous water, head to Claife Viewing Station. Located by the ferry on Windermere’s west shore, the viewing station, which dates back to the 1790s, has been beautifully restored and even includes a colourful stained glass window to enhance the already gorgeous view.
Book a room at Ambleside Salutation Hotel & Spa, WorldHotels Distinctive. Nestled just past the north edge of the lake, you can see some beautiful scenery in all directions
Filey Brigg
Filey Brigg is a beautiful stretch of the North Yorkshire coast, home to plenty of interesting wildlife and offering stunning views along the coastline. The beach is teeming with rockpools for you to explore while you take in the landscape, so don’t forget your bucket and net!
The rocks of Filey Brigg are also the focus of an interesting legend. It’s said they’re actually the bones of a cake-loving dragon who was eventually outsmarted by the local townfolk and fell into the sea after eating one too many traditional Yorkshire Parkin cakes. Oops.
When you’ve finished rockpooling and paddling, you can enjoy a tasty slice of Parkin for yourself in one of Filey’s many lovely cafes. Maybe after some traditional fish and chips?
